During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, MNC activity was dominated by natural resource exploitation and supporting service activities. It became easier for MNCs to sustain managerial control over foreign direct investment (FDI) growth prompt in their activities. MNC activities were carried out by diverse businesses: There were large, small, managerial and family-based businesses.Between the period of the 2nd World War and the 1970s, there was stagnation in the growth of international businesses especially between the 1920s and 1950s which was followed by a gradual increase in relative importance MNCs. There was a shift from vertical FDI which involved integration with producers at different stages in the production of a particular product or a related group of products to horizontal FDI which involved integration with producers producing a similar range of goods at the same stage of production.In the late 20th century, the policy environment changed. Governments were interfering less in the operation of MNCs. Economic growth slowed down considerably globally and competition increased. There was also considerable increase in trade between firms which picked up again towards the end of the century.
