This directive was also incorporated into the Data Protection Act 1998 and therefore illustrating the UK’s adherence to the protection of individual’s data in all sources. There have been some new directives from the EU which are important to the protection of electronic data, specifically in relation to the new forms of information such as the Internet. These directives are; European Parliament and Council Directive 2002/21 on a common regulatory framework for electronic communication networks and services; European Parliament and Council Directive 2002/20 on the authorisation of electronic communications networks and service; European Parliament and Council Directive 2002/22 on universal service and users' rights relating to electronic communications networks and services; European Parliament and Council Directive 2002/19 on access to, and interconnection of, electronic communications networks and associated facilities; and the European Parliament and Council Directive 2002/58 concerning the processing of personal data and the protection of privacy in the electronic communications sector. Each of these directives is attempting to regulate the electronic data held on sources such as the Internet and protect the rights of the individual. The UK has a long tradition of protecting the privacy of individuals; however the Internet is very hard to control because of the phantom nature of cyberspace, the fact it is based on the intangible, as opposed to the tangible. The regulation that the EU is aiming at is toward the service providers because they are the most tangible aspect of the Internet, because each connection has to be through a service provider. These are a very new set of directives and required state implementation by the 25th of July 2003 therefore is very new to each member state. The UK implemented the new directive, especially in relation to the privacy directive and has ensured a high level of protection to the individual’s security and protection in all forms of data protection, including the Internet. This seems to be the basic nature of the UK’s Data Protection Act 1998 and has been followed through with cyberspace information.
