As opposed to the possible gains that are reflected in the above statistics, it can be asserted that there are also possible negative impacts of new member states joining the European Union. These fears include the cost of labor in the UK and in the newer states. This is because the newer states have a lower labor cost, and the fear is that the UK companies may lose markets to them. This apparently is a reasonable fear because there will be many interested in these cheaper markets (Parkin & Powell, 2005, 23-34). However, members that joined the European Union in the past were also observed with their cheaper markets. There was no great shift as soon as these new members came in. Therefore, with the newer members a rush of cheaper imports remains unlikely. One point to make here is that all members also have access to tariff-free markets in the European Union. Also, it has been observed that the European Union has already experienced the bulk of competition driven by lower valued goods[7].
Having asserted that lower valued goods will be available when newer states join the European Union, and that a rush of cheaper imports is unlikely, fair competition is expected to prevail. This refers to the fact that member states of the European Union are already aware of what kinds of goods and markets exist; they are aware of value goods, and naturally would not go for importing goods that are not really of standard. However, making use of cheaper labor in newer states is a point to consider. It is also worth considering that by carrying out production in states where labor is cheaper can benefit those who can make use of it.
