The plethora of works that Karl Marx produced in is lifetime is astounding for two reasons. Firstly, the sheer quantity of literary effort is enormous and vastly surpasses many of his contemporaries and academic decedents. The second broad matter that sets Marx apart from other social scientists is the impact his thoughts had on the wider academic community and actual prescriptive political polices adopted by major world nations. In this regard he truly unique. There simply does not exist an academic discipline in the general arena of social science that has not been touched to some degree by his work. Furthermore, few, if any political philosophers have had such a widespread impact on the political arena. It is of course fair to say that since the collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe at the end of the 1980s and early 1990s, Marxist thought has lost some of the potent appeal that it previously enjoyed. In addition, the relative political and social repression that existed for much of the Soviet Unions history has also cast a stain on Marx’s name. Such accusations however are on the whole unjust and it is likely that Marx himself would have held the Soviet brand of Communism with the same contempt as many anti socialists.
