There exists a continuous presence of hunter-gatherer for thousands of years. Traditional aboriginal environmental knowledge is thoroughly reflected in the indigenous people’s management of the cultural and physical landscapes, for instance, the conservation of biodiversity. Over recent years, conserving biodiversity has gained raising awareness. As a result of increasingly urgent environmental problems, climate change, for example, biodiversity has as well become a burning question for Northern Australia. Due to the migration to new regions of certain species, indigenous people are faced with enormous management problems in enhancing local diversity. Besides, climate change has great impact on species through its effect on introduced or indigenous pathogens. The biodiversity losses can be enormous and may precede direct impact of warming and altered rainfall. (Smith & Werner 2009, p. 110)
Based on an anthropological perspective, this essay is designed to explain how an anthropological view can enhance our understanding of conservation of biodiversity of species in Northern Australia, and how this understanding influence the resolution of the issue.
